Hey, everyone! Going to see my OB today. Since Unisom/Zofran aren't working well, do you guys have any suggestions of where to go from here, drug-wise? I'd like to have a list to give her. Please leave a comment pronto if you can, as my appointment is in 3 hours. Thanks!!
I'll keep coming back as I'm looking things up. Have you tried Stematil? I've read that it can be prescribed with Zofran and is for stopping vomiting. Here is the Motherrisk page:

It comes as syrup, injection and suppositories and suppositories are mentioned by a few folk who can't keep medicine down long enough to work.
I'm on cyclzine which is from the antihistamine family but you've never mentioned it back to me so I assume you can't get it or tried it and found it innefective. It can be taken orally or as injections. It is more of an antinausea drug than an anti vomiting one.
There's always the cannabis to try but you know that and it's not something for discussing with your OB. I'm not mentioning it lightly.
Do you think a drip would help if you've been vomiting non-stop? Maybe you're dehydrated and if you are that can make the nausea and sickness much worse, maybe more than the Zofran can cope with. Are you going to discuss other ways of taking the Zofran? I'm assuming you're taking it orally at the moment. Are you keeping it down long enough for it to take effect?
ReplyDeleteOkay, I see that you can be prescribed cyclizine, stematil and zofran all at once in the USA but no Zofran here in UK unless you've tried cyclizine and stematil and found them innefective.
ReplyDeleteI've read on the help her forum about folk finding steroids worked when Zofran etc didn't - steroids (Hydrocortisone via IV and Prednisilone). Have you thoughts on those?
I think they may be reluctant to prescribe steroids early in your pregnancy but I honestly will only know what I read on the web and I'm sure you've read already...
ReplyDeleteHave you been taking anything that could be making your sickness worse? In my case iron in pregnancy vitamins is awful.
I've read about Zofran and it not working when you're dehydrated so I'll mention that again. Do you think you could be dehydrated?
I see you posted on help her. I'm on there as nemomum. Maybe better to post in the third and second tri forums as the women in there will have more experience.
ReplyDeleteWhat about a zofran pump?
ReplyDeleteHope your appointment went well and that today will be a better day for you xxx
ReplyDeleteI know this isn't ideal, but I'll tell you what worked for me last time. It's especially helpful if you've gotten "behind" the vomiting, not able to keep it under control. That sounds like where you might be right now.
ReplyDeleteMy midwife put me in the hospital for several days. The first day and a half, I ate and drank nothing by mouth, just had an iv. I was on a round-the-clock schedule of medication: first zofran, then reglan, then phenergan. Rinse and repeat :) Then I slowly added water by mouth, then clear broth, then jello. By day 4 I was eating about as much as I ever can when I'm pregnant, so it was good for me.
i agree we know that aggressive treatment is the way to go. Don't get behind on the vomitting, and if you do, get the IV, not just one. Let them admit you and keep you there, or get home care set up now. How is your doctor treating you.
ReplyDeletePraying for you! I am so sorry you are going through this again.
ReplyDeleteVery worried about you. I hope you are just quiet because you are resting. Just wanted to let you know that I'm thinking of you and hoping for the best for you. I'm sorry that I don't have better suggestions.
