Low Carb Diet - Now for Morning Sickness Prevention?

* This article is Part I in a series. To go to the next article, click here

Okay, ladies! Here we go! I'm going to try to type this up in the 15 minutes my DH and DS are gone to Ace Hardware. Good luck to me on that one!

This could be big....

A month or two ago, someone posted an article on my local birth network Yahoo! group which had been posted on the blog "The Heart Scan Blog," which is authored by a cardiologist in Wisconsin, Dr. William Davis, who treats cardiology patients using a low-carb diet approach. I've been reading his blog ever since, and it's very interesting - I recommend it.

I should say here that I am in NO way an expert in nutrition. I do a ton of reading on the subject, but I find the subject baffling in that there is an immense amount of information and opinion, much of it conflicting. The only concrete personal conclusion I have come to is that I believe the official information given by the government is pretty much dead wrong. On other subjects, I'm still reading!

Anyhow, the article posted was this one:

The Low-Carb Gynecologist

(*Clock ticking while I wait for everyone to read the article....*)

For those naughty readers out there who didn't read the article (shame!), Dr. Davis records his interview with Dr. Michael Fox, a fertility doctor in Florida who uses very-low-carb diets in his practice to treat fertility disorders and promote IVF transfer success.

Originally, the diet developed by Dr. Fox's center was used primarily to treat PCOS/PCOD (polycistic ovarian syndrome/disease), but they now use the diet with all of their fertility patients. Because I don't want to waste time rehashing what the article already said about the history of the diet and how they use it, just refer to the article (read it now!).

So anyway, I found this information fascinating - but, naturally, what fascinated me the most was the little sentence in the paragraph regarding pregnancy nausea:
"We know that pregnancy hormones dramatically worsen insulin resistance that is responsible for the condition, gestational diabetes. If insulin resistance is worsened, then reactive hypoglycemia is worsened. One of the biggest symptoms of hypoglycemia is nausea. So, in response to this, we have counseled our patients on the diet in pregnancy and have found a dramatic reduction in nausea. We recommend snacking every two hours in pregnancy."
After seeing this, I immediately hopped onto the center's website and emailed Dr. Fox to find out more - specifically asking him if he would recommend the diet for prevention of HG. Several weeks later, I received a very gracious letter from him, in which he stated:
"I would definitely recommend the diet. Our patients that follow the diet experience little if any nausea. Nausea is due to the hypoglycemia produced from the dramatic increase in insulin resistance in pregnancy. Our most dramatic example was a patient who actually had electively terminated about 7 pregnancies for nausea and came to us with that story."
That one sentence really got me. A woman who has electively aborted multiple babies due to HG is someone dealing with serious HG - and she was able to have a pregnancy without undue nausea. That is BIG.

He also said:
"The other areas that appear to be dramatically changed by the diet in pregnancy are gestational diabetes, hypertension in pregnancy and reduction in the weight gain in pregnancy."
Dr. Fox sent me the center's diet sheets, and he has given me permission to share them (as well as the content of his emails). He recommends that a woman be on this diet for at least 2 months pre-conception so that her body can get used to it. Post-conception would NOT be the time to try this diet, in my opinion, as once NVP/HG has developed, carbs are often the only helpful foods. This is really a pre-pregnancy diet.

A few notes:

(1) Either one lives on this diet (and is okay with surprise babies) or conception has to be planned around the diet.

(2) After studying the sheets, I can tell you frankly that this diet is NOT EASY. It is not just low-carb, it is VERY low-carb. Coming from someone who lasted 48 hours on the last low-carb diet I tried (24 hours if you want to discount the 24 hours I spent cheating) and who has an ongoing love affair with carbs (I went to school to be a pastry chef, for goodness' sake!), I can say that this diet is extremely difficult. Dr. Fox says that many of his clients require nutritional counseling (plus a whole lotta discipline) to make this diet work. You have been warned.

Also, I make no guarantees. This may or may not work in individual cases. Do not try this diet and then say "You promised it would work!" I have no idea if it will work in any specific case. It's just a "give this a try and see what happens!" sort of thing.

Additionally, if you do use this diet, please get in touch with Dr. Fox and let him know how it went. They have not been able to study this phenomenon formally, but they would love any input.

I'm going to be trying this diet starting tomorrow - not for conception, but just to lose some baby weight if possible. I will report in! Phase I (which lasts 1-2 weeks) is the easiest phase (it's just the phase that gently "weeds" out bad carbs, so it's cutting out added sugar, white flour, white rice, and potatoes).

And there you have it! Thoughts?

On the diet document - I can't figure out how to upload it to my blog - does anyone know how to attach a document to a blog? In the meantime, if you send me your email, I will email you the document.

Okay, let's try this....

Pregnancy Diet Sheets

That seemed to work. Cheers!

* One later note: All users use this diet at THEIR OWN RISK. Please do your research and come to your own conclusions as to whether this diet is safe for pregnancy. There are those who think that low carb diets are not safe for pregnancy. I am not one of them - I believe that low carb diets are perfectly safe, pregnant or not, and I am completely comfortable with doing a VLC diet while pregnant. Further evidence of the safety of this diet comes from meat-eating cultures who live their entire existence on low carb (or no carb) diets, such as the Inuit people and the Masai. However, this is YOUR body, YOUR baby, and YOUR choice to do the diet, so please do your research FIRST.

* Later note: Now click to Part II in this series, "The Answer to the Big Question," for more updated information and tips on doing this diet.

* An Even Later Note: See my final summary post from November 2014, Avoiding Hyperemesis Gravidarum With a Very Low Carb (VLC) Diet

  1. Hmmm... interesting.

How to attach a document -- probably just upload it to Google Docs and then link from the article to the document.

  2. Wow, this is very interesting! Is there some way to give you an email address without posting it in the comments? Last time I did that it got picked up and used for way too much spam :o(

  3. You can upload it to yousendit.com or 4shared.com (both of which I've used) and then they'll give you a URL for the document, which you can post.

A lot of what he says makes sense in connecting the hypoglycemia with nausea. My RE is a carb nazi and really wanted me on a diet like that prior to transfer too. He never mentioned in terms of morning sickness (oh, if I'd only known better) but he does tie it to PCOS, GD, etc.

  4. Okay, guys! I've got the link up now, so you can just click on it and print/save rather than having to exchange via email. Let me know if it doesn't work!

Jen, I used yousendit.com, and it says it will be available until July 25 - does that mean I need to upload it once a week? Thanks so much for the info!!!

  5. Hi D,
I'm not sure because I've never had to have a document available much longer than that. Perhaps try 4shared instead, or google "free file sharing."

  7. Very interested in the information... but was unable to open the document for some reason. I recently saw something about that on another site.. not sure I could go without carbs sorry to say... it's about all I eat :( Yikes!

  8. Kirsten - Hi! Let me know if you ever want to see the document. It was only available for a week from the site I used, but I'd be happy to send it. I, too, am a total carb-lover (as you see, my trial run with the diet ended after only 5 days), but I'm hoping I'd be able to do it if it truly could prevent HG. Impossible to tell until I try it! Thanks for reading. :)

  9. I just found your blog today and am busy reading through it. I read this article a little while back and as we were planning on TTC, I started a low carb diet, though I meant to, but didn't conatct the Dr.'s office for the official diet protocols. I eliminated all grains, sugars, starchy veggies, etc. Though, I haven't stuck to it 100%, I would say I have drastically changed the way I am eating on a pretty regular basis. The carb theory just made so much sense, I was a huge carb addict, but after two HG (though on the milder side) pregnanices, I want to have more kids and do anything to avoid HG again. I would very much like to see the e-mails from Dr. Fox, but I cannot find your personal e-mail on this site. Can you let me know the best way to contact you to get this info? Thanks in advance!

  13. Hi,
I didnt read the diet sheets but I started going ultra low carb, especially in the morning, and that has reduced my all day pregnancy nausea by about 85%. This is like the best discovery I have ever made, I was so depressed about feeling this way, I would also crash hard and fall asleep for sometimes 3 hrs right after a high carb meal, no matter what time of day or how long I slept the night before. I hope more people can get relief like me. Thank you so much.
    Yours Gratefully,
    Brook.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Brook - WOW! And thank you so much for commenting! It sounds very similar. The diet sheets are a VLCD (very low carbohydrate diet), so very like what you were doing. My target date is next Wednesday for starting into the uber-difficult Phase II, so we'll see how that goes! Yikes!!!

Part of me thinks "What if this doesn't work? All of that effort for nothing???" But then I think - what if it DID work? That would SO be worth it!!! :)

Interestingly enough, I found (after re-reading the sheets) that this doc didn't actually have any interest in NVP/HG at all - he developed the diet to address PCOS (and the higher miscarriage rate associated with PCOS), and the morning sickness reduction/elimination was just an interesting side effect that he noticed. Whatever works!!! :)

Thanks again for writing! That's the encouragement I need to give this a try! :)

  17. I'd love to have the diet sheets from you as well... We are ttc in the next 6 months and I am trying to prepare now... both mentally and physically... as a 2x HG survivor, I don't know if I can do this again without a plan! Especially with 2 at home to care for.

    ReplyDelete
  18. For the Colorado Steffens - Sure thing! Just leave me your email address, and I will send it right over. The phase that I used was Phase II, and it is definitely something to start pre-conception, as it takes quite a bit of getting used to.

I am now writing after having actually USED this diet during an early pregnancy, and I think that it did help considerably. However, I have no randomized trial results - it could have been chance - and I did still have to take nausea meds. Additionally, my HG is milder on the spectrum than some of you severe-HG ladies. All that to say - yes, I do think it helped, BUT be prepared that it might NOT - don't neglect to prepare for an HG pregnancy just because of this. Best of luck to you!!! Blessings!

  21. Hi!

Can you PLEASE e-mail me the Diet Sheets? xtofer1973 at yahoo dot com

My wife is pregnant with our eighth child and she has mild morning sickness. We have been using Vitamin B6 and Unisom (doxylamine), which is basically the same as Diclectin/Benedictin (anti-morning sickness drug very popular in Canada (they call it NVP (Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy)). That has helped a lot. But when she started to describe the small feedings throughout the day that help her, it sounded to me like a low blood sugar problem and she said that she had read that NVP is related to blood sugar. Since low-carb diets control blood sugar, I googled it with "morning sickness" and I found your post. FASCINATING. THANKS SO MUCH!

  27. Oh my goodness! I can't believe what I'm reading! I've had HG with all three pregnancies, requiring long term hospital stays and lots of trips to the ER for IVs. I just delivered my third baby a week ago, and during that pregnancy, began having seizures. Ironically, a diet similar to VLC is used to treat seizures. I also have PCOS, which is treated with a VLC diet. Looks like it's all connected? My husband and I were considering sterilization at this point, but part of me wants to try one more time after being on this diet for a couple of years. That said, I would LOVE to see the diet sheets if you have a minute to email them: berrych (at) eou (dot) edu THANK YOU!

  67. Hi,
I left this comment on another of your posts but thought I would repost it here.

I'm also researching HG. I'd love to see the diet that you outlined (the low carb one). It sounds like a ketogenic type diet? Those kinds of diets are often used to prevent seizures and other types of brain disorders (even brain cancer.) There are different variations (some less severe). Anyway, that's an interesting connection.

The other thing I found interesting (and agree with) is that you said you feel like your body has an allergy to pregnancy hormones. My latest thinking is that HG is a form of auto-immune disease. When I was in nursing school many moons ago, auto-immune meant no one knew what was causing it. Now, we understand it a bit better, but the typical medical establishment doesn't know how to deal with a body that is attacking itself. The good news is that many people are healing themselves or putting their auto-immune disease into remission by changing their diets. The key is not to shut down the immune system further, but to take out the stuff that is causing the immune system to misfire.

The other thing that this post made me think of is iodine deficiency is little known, but common. The other side of being deficient in iodine is having too much bromide (bromide poisoning). I can't go into all the details but there are lots of details online. (start with breastcancerchoices.org) Here are the connections I just made:
    1) too much bromide can cause symptoms that we see in HG. Hypersalivation, metallic taste in the mouth. Not necessarily the nausea and vomiting but I'll get to that.
    2) Iodine is needed to maintain your blood sugar. There is a story that Dr. Fletchas (iodine researching Dr.) tells where a woman in the ER with a blood sugar over 1000 was able to get off all insulin in like 4 weeks because she also started taking iodine. He didn't know that connection prior to that patient.
    3) And Dr. Fletchas has helped many women heal their PCOS with iodine! I'm so excited right now, I'm going to burst.

I'll leave my email because I would love to hear back from you. (or anyone who wants to discuss this. I feel like the only way we're going to get to the bottom of this is if we all talk and share our insights.)

    Rachel

    swimmingwithfrogs AT gmail dot com

P.S. This is the link to the interview with Dr. Fletchas. It's really long but fascinating. http://curezone.com/upload/Audio/Iodine/IodineDrFlechasDrStanTwoHour.mp3

  68. Hi, Swimming With Frogs (Rachel)!

Thank you so much for visiting and leaving all this great info! I'm so glad it's in the comment thread so other mamas can access it!

I will email you the diet sheets so that you can check them out. I think Phase II is basically ketogenic, though I don't think I'm in ketosis because I'm eating tomatoes. However, you never know - I've never tested for it. I've been on the diet for about a year and a half now, with occasional slip-ups, so we'll see!

Another thing I'm doing right now is fermented foods - you can read about that here:

    http://stevenandersonfamily.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-cause-and-cure-of-morning-sickness.html

This worked spectacularly well for the author, a friend of mine, who is now 26 weeks with no HG (and the pregnancy was TWINS).

If there is one thing I've learned in seven years of reading about health, it's that health can be changed through diet. Most of the diseases we consider irreversible (Type II diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, whatever!) can be drastically improved with diet, and I've experienced that on a small-scale myself. That's why I'm always hopeful that the cure for HG is out there, because I believe that it's a matter of healing something that is off-balance in our bodies, rather than seeking new drugs.

I'll definitely be looking at your material! Thanks for stopping by!

  81. Hello Diana, I would greatly appreciate a copy of the diet sheets. In my last pregnancie I had some success with vit B injections. But still needed medications to stay out of the hospital. But I also had Gestational diabetes and worked closly with an endocrinologist and followed a very strict low carb diet during each pregnacy for 12 weeks. My email is ivymarie82@yahoo.com. Thank you

I know this is an older post, but I am preparing to get pregnant again in 2018 (I had 2 HG pregnancies in the past). However, the download link for your pregnancy diet sheets doesn't seem to be working. Can you send me the sheets? jcmail121@gmail.com

I have sent the diet sheets to you, so let me know if they don't show up on your (email) doorstep! :) Best wishes with your next pregnancy!!

  94. Hey, I have been following a vlc diet for years and am now pregnant and am so sick! Only 6.5 weeks in and can hardly move for the last week. All day. Not actually vomiting just dizziness nausea and lightheadedness. Craving carbs at times but mainly off all food but having to force it down as having an empty tummy makes it so much worse. Would love to receive the diet sheets to see if following something might have a positive effect. My email address is Naomi.hannay at hotmail. Co. UK. Thank you :)
