In Which... I Go Shopping!

I am not a shopper... except at one time of year, and this is it!

Used homeschool curriculum sale time!

Due to stomach bugs and various life events, I only made one sale this year. But it was the best! As usual, I found nothing for which I was looking, but came home with lots of great things anyway.

At used curriculum sales, I face a couple of challenges:

(1) Being overwhelmed by the sheer volume, and by the voice in my head that says, "Hurry, you're going to miss something you should have bought!"

(2) Seeing something that I want but needing to pass it up because it's over-priced. This happens fairly often.

(3) Seeing something that I want but needing to pass it up because the physical quality of the book isn't going to meet our needs (i.e. yellowed paperback books, falling-apart hardbacks, etc.).

Despite that, I enjoyed my time thoroughly and am sorry it's over till next year!

Here they my finds!

For ME: I especially need the selection on the bottom left.

Missionary Biographies - I'm especially excited about the titles from "Christian Heroes Then and Now" (top left, bottom right). We are currently reading their book about Gladys Aylward, and the children love it.

Classics and History Readers - I adore the Eyewitness Classics series (top left and bottom right) and was thrilled to find two more. "The Yearling" and "Pollyanna" are classics that I want to have in our library. (I am currently working to build a solid library for our family of good-quality classics for children and young adults.)

For Young Children:

Science:

Okay, this one is admittedly one I should have checked out before buying. It's a great book, but it takes human reproduction further than I would have liked. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with this one.

History:

And there you have it! A very successful day, and a very enjoyable one. Not only did I find lots of delicious books, but I met up with lots of local homeschoolers and got to chat - always so much fun.

And next time... I'll be there at the very beginning so that I can snag even more!

(Books are the only area in which my minimalist frenzy is in severe remission.)

Happy shopping for those of you heading in the same direction this time of year!

  1. Glad you found some things. I ended up with some good finds too, and some I probably should have left behind too. I was glad to have seen you!

I'm a little envious of that yellow Missionary book!

We're starting with the younger version of the Heroes books you found. I'm excited!

    1. I haven't even looked at the Missionary book yet - I'll have to check it out! I picked it because I opened it randomly and found a mention of Tucson in it, so I figured it must be USA-based. (Maybe???) And I didn't know the Heroes books had younger versions - cool! I'll have to look for those. The 4yo is enjoying the full versions, though I don't know how much he understands.

It was lovely to see you! I hope we can chat again soon!!:)

  2. Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends has been a favorite of ours for years. I hope you enjoy it, too. :)

I missed most of our area sales, but I did get to one, and it was fun.

    1. I'm looking forward to reading that one - I could definitely use the advice. As I've written on this site before, the sibling-bickering issue has blindsided me - and growing up as an only child, I've just never seen it in person before. Yikes!! :)

I hope that you and the twelve are having a wonderful summer!! :)

  3. The Christian Heroes Then and Now series was one of my favorites as a kid! We must have had twenty of them by the time we stopped collecting them :)

    1. Oh, I'm glad to hear that, Kristina! Awesome. I hope to continue collecting them. I think I got the first one from someone you probably know - K.K., a VHS mom who left it at the blessing table a few years back. I'm so glad we're acquainted with this series now! :)

  4. Hi Diana!
Looks like you found some great stuff! I've actually been wanting to read the two "The Way Home" books. We have the Brothers and Sisters book, and we're about halfway through it. I gave it a break when we moved, and we just haven't gotten back to it--but we should:) It had some great, biblical advice for how to get along, that applies not only to siblings, but to any relationship. The book on reproduction--ha, ha--I have several of those types hidden away in a chest in my closet right now! Someone gave them to me, and I don't know what to do with them, either. I considered using a Sharpie to mark out the most descriptive parts, or tearing those pages out altogether. I don't know...I did purchase several books from Focus on the Family on that subject, leveled according to age group, which I've found helpful. But those are in my closet, too, definitely not just a "pick up and read" sort of thing.
Anyway, I can relate to your not wanting to shop; I'm the same way. I get stressed out in the store, like I forget what I went there to get, or where it is; or, I feel overwhelmed with having the kids with me; or, I get distracted by all the other stuff, etc. I usually prefer to stay home. Actually, I don't get out of the house but once or twice a week. And, I'm okay with that! :)
    Love to read your posts!

    1. Hi, Jessica!

I read one or both of the "The Way Home" books some years ago - when interlibrary loan was still free at our library!! - and I think it/they was/were quite good. I think I found them extreme at the time, but I don't think I would now. I'm looking forward to re-reading them.

We have another book (science) that I did use a marker on, but unfortunately it turned out rather see-through, so the end result was rather worse than how it started!!! Still not sure what to do with this one.

Yup, you pretty much described me as a shopper. Stressed out, easily distracted, forgot what I came for, can't find it anyway even if I do remember it, etc. That's why I LOVE online shopping. If I could do it for everything, I would! :)

      Have a wonderful day!! :)
